Kaum hatte Piktors das Paradies betreten, so stand er vor einem Baume, der war zugleich Mann und Frau. Piktor grüsste den Baum mit Ehrfurcht und fragte: "Bist du der Baum des Lebens?" Als aber statt des Baumes die Schlange ihm Antwort geben wollte, wandte er sich ab und ging weiter. Er war ganz Auge, alles gefiel ihm so sehr. Deutlich spürte er, dass er in der Heimat und am Quell des Lebens sei. |

Hermann Hesse is among those writers who surprise or irritate but also incite to enchantment. Memory let by childhood's lost paradise is often material to build his tales. Opposed to materialistic and flat world, he offers charm and magic in his poetry.
